Overheard at the Next Table

I wasn’t purposely eavesdropping – I was sitting alone, and I just couldn’t help but overhear what they were talking about. It was the word artist that grabbed my attention. It was in reference to a book that I own, and love called, ZEN and the Art of Making a Living, by Laurence G. Boldt. It is one of those books I’ve owned for a long time, and I love it because it is full of useful ideas, especially when you are looking for a job or trying to change the course of your trajectory, making a transition of some kind. I learned a long time ago that being Zen when things get challenging is one of the best ways to cope during times that want to be called difficult. It takes a while to learn how to do it, but in the end, it is the best tool available. What I overheard was very calming. One said “Your life’s work is an Art in the sense of expressing your essential self in the world of forms. The inspiration and the discipline of the artist provides a metaphor for a new vison of work.” Now is the time....

I think this is so true. And following this path has always provided me with comfort during turbulent times. It seems for me that almost by tuning everything out I get a clearer picture of where I am and what I need to do next. When I say tuning out, I mean no sound, no sights, no films, TV, radio, except some white noise or nothing at all. Quiet… peace and quiet. Blocking out all sound has such a calming effect sometimes; it allows one to think of nothing, and to me that is what Zen is really about. Think of nothing. No easy task, but well worth it if you can do it.
